The Voice Behind the Journey

Hello I'm Daniel Hillert, a nature photographer and writer based on Malcolm Island, has spent decades enjoying our natural beauty, but at the same time witnessing the decline of our ecosystems. Reluctant to be outspoken. But now, a turning point has come—one that compels me to speak, to question, and to reflect on the fragile beauty of the natural world.
"For decades, I believed my photographs were enough.

I hoped that if people could see the beauty I was privileged to witness, they would understand its value.

But over time, I began to notice something else. The landscapes remained beautiful, yet they were changing. Wildlife was under pressure. Ecosystems were becoming increasingly fragile.

Water • Air • Earth • Fire is my attempt to start a conversation about what we are losing, what still remains, and why it matters."

The title Water • Air • Earth • Fire is strong because it is simple, universal, and timeless. It suggests that this isn't just a story about specific places in Canada—it's about the fundamental elements that connect all life.

The most compelling version of this project may be one that blends stunning imagery with your personal observations—not as a narrator delivering facts, but as a witness sharing what I’ve seen over a lifetime.

I think the heart of the project is captured in a single idea:

"This is not a story just about nature. It is a story about our relationship with nature—and what happens when that relationship is forgotten."
